Football suspended in Cambodia – 2-8-2021

Football suspended in Cambodia, again over Covid-19 fears according to a release from the  Cambodian National Competitions Committee (CNCC), the governing body for football in Cambodia.

I thought football was back?

Football was back until March of this year when the aftermath of the February 20th incident meant that it was again suspended. Football was allowed to return in July, as reported by Khmer Nights, but with heavy restrictions. Initially no fans were allowed, and those of us “lucky” enough to attend matches were required to take painful Covid tests before matches.

Sadly the resumption was to last little over a month though, with all fixtures now being suspended. It comes as the whole nation has fallen under some kind of curfew, or lockdown as fears of the Delta variant, as well rising cases have started to heavily affect everyday life within Kingdom.

Football suspended in Cambodia – What about the Hun Sen Cup?

Ironically the CNCC had announced that the Hun Sen Cup (HSC) regional rounds would resume this month, they sadly announced this on the same day that Phnom Penh announced its latest lockdown.

For the uninitiated the Hun Sen Cup (HSC) is the FA Cup of Cambodian Football, with the regional rounds deciding not only which provincial clubs get to meet the big guns, but also who gets promoted into the C-League.

With the latest suspension it is very much unclear if the regional rounds will ever get around to being completed, but also if there will be any C-League promotion, or relegation this year.

When will football resume in Cambodia?

For now it is a suspension, rather than a cancellation, so it is hoped it will mirror the current 2 week lockdown that we are facing in Phnom Penh and beyond. As to when it might resume, we can but hope it does not take too long.

So, there you have it, no booze, no bars, no football!
